Columbia Gorge Fiber Festival – The Dalles, Oregon

This festival remains one of my very favorites. I love the location, the marketplace, the students....

A new lineup of classes for Fall 2017:

Knitting with Linen
In this class you will learn to love linen! It’s a great fiber to wear, but there are some tricks to knitting with it. The focus will be on variants of dropped & extended stitches along with modern bold lace, stitches that show linen to its best advantage. Washing, blocking and the importance of swatches are key topics as well. Relates to Framework, Norah’s new book published by Quince & Co.

Knitting & Crocheting with Found Materials
Repurpose those clothes, textiles and plastic supermarket bags you have piling up because you knew you’d have a use for them someday. Make the yarn from plastic bags, T-shirts, old sheets or yard goods. After you make the yarn begin a project. Either knit or crochet a cowl or a market bag on large hooks and needles.

Experiments with Cables
A fun, creative approach to learning how to make up new cables. Instead of starting with a chart, students will play with making their own free form cable pattern while knitting. New concepts are introduced randomly in the form of a card game. After the knitting is underway we’ll take some time to learn how to note what you’ve done in chart form.

The Fibi Sweater & Cable Substitutions
Learn the ins and outs of knitting Fibi, a cabled pullover, knit in pieces from the bottom up. Master details like bamboo stitch as a horizontal accent and tapered twisted rib at the armholes. Learn how to do mattress stitch that looks so good, you’ll have trouble finding the seams when you are done. Knitters can choose alternate cable for their body and sleeve cable panels from Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook. Take the time to customize your Fibi. There are several alternative ways to alter the neck finishing to suit your taste and we’ll talk about changing the sleeve and body length as well. For those who prefer a fully fitted sweater we’ll go over the changes you’ll need to make.

Fixing Cables: As You Work and After
Tackle all the techniques Norah uses for fixing cables, as while you are knitting and after. Master the tricks for ripping back, perform dropping down exercises and execute the dreaded ‘snip and replace’ technique (used only in dire emergencies). The next technique may be your favorite – practice Norah’s trick for reversing a cable’s direction worked when it is too late for any other easy fix.

Cable College – Harrisville New Hampshire

Learn what steps to take to make up new cables. It’s not as mysterious as it might seem. Gain insight into how Norah’s mind works when she is doing her favorite thing - making up new cable stitches. Then, delve into making up your own. Day one focuses on stitch substitutions and other additions to change basic and multi-step cables. Day two introduces fills (textured and lace), inserts (drop stitches and leaves) and mirroring (vertical, horizontal and combined) by the afternoon you’ll be charting a complex cable of your own.

On your studio day you’re free to structure your time as you like without formal instruction while you work on knitting up and tweaking the complex cable you began the day before. The studio is available for your use all day (and night). There will also be a tour of Harrisville Designs spinning mill that day for those who are interested. Day 3 brings us back together as a class to see what everyone has accomplished, brain storm about variations and improvements, and bringing your work to the next level. We’ll wrap up with deciding how you like to use your new cable, with a focus on how to add it to an existing sweater, accessory or pillow pattern. Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook will be used in class. Copies will be available for purchase.

Please call 1(603) 827-3996 for more information or to sign up for the class.

Easy Designing: Cable Additions & Substitutions

Ever wished you knew how to add cables to a sweater pattern? The first step to designing is the urge to change patterns. Explore how to add cables to an existing pattern and how to substitute one cable for another while studying examples from hats and scarves to skirts and sweaters. Norah has devised a method to make switching up cables easier, but be prepared to swatch. This six-hour class takes the day to fully develop and prove our ideas.  (Full day class)

Charts and Schematics: How to Use Eazydraw on Your Mac

You don’t need a special knitting software package to easily make beautiful cable, lace, and colorwork charts or draw professional-looking schematics on your computer. One simple, inexpensive drawing app for your Mac will do it all. Norah will guide you through the process she uses to make charts and schematics with the easy-to-understand and intuitive program/app, Eazydraw. Note: This app is for Mac computers only and you need to provide your own Mac laptop for the class.

Choose Your Own Arrangement—Cabled Hat

Design a cabled hat without the hard work. Choose from a variety of different cable charts designed for the class and learn how to complete your hat by following prewritten design templates for a beanie, slouchy hat, or beret. All three styles can be knit seamlessly in the round or flat, then seamed. Experience reading charts is helpful, but if you’ve never done it before, you can learn it here. The variety of charts will include a range of difficulty so intermediate or advanced knitters can forge ahead and take on a more challenging chart while beginners can keep it simple.
