Designing Surprising Sweaters from Simple Geometric Shapes
Please call 1(603) 827-3996 for more information or to sign up for the class.
Day 1: The Big Picture
Explore sweater structures made from geometric shapes. We’ll look at how circles, rectangles and triangles can be used to create whole garments or combined with classic sweater shapes to make innovative, modern garments. We’ll search for inspirational ideas on the web then you’ll test your concepts in fleece fabric to perfect shapes and fit. Daily sweater calculation lesson: Armholes and sleeves for a blanket sweater.
Day 2: The Fabric
Learn about stitch resources and how to make up variations and new stitch patterns. Experiment with different kinds of yarn. Swatch stitches and perfect fabrics to go with your sweater structure from day one. Daily sweater calculation lesson: Knitting circles.
Day 3: Sketches and Schematics
Practice several styles of sketching to see which suits you best. Get your idea down in sketch form to work out some of the details, followed by an accurate schematic on graph paper (or on your Mac or iPad). Daily sweater calculation lesson: Knitting hexagons and triangles
Day 4: Variations & Calculations
What other ideas does your design lead to? Dreaming up variations can be one of the most creative and rewarding aspects of designing. We’ll finish the week by working on the calculations you’ll need to complete your project. Daily sweater calculation lesson: Armholes and sleeve caps.
